Clean Water for Haiti

Through my church, Christ & St. Luke's Episcopal in Norfolk, I have begun raising money to dig a well in Haiti, a beautiful but tragic place where more than half of its 10 million people don't have access to clean water. The group I belong to, Caring for Creation, is working with Haitioutreach.org, one of the most respected organizations working within that country. By the end of this year, we hope to raise $15,000 -- the cost of planning, drilling and maintaining a well on the Haiti mainland. So far, we're more than a third of the way there!

You can help by sending a check to Christ & St. Luke's and designating Haiti Clean Water. Please send to:

Water!

I'm watching on the right as water gushes from the well.
At long last, the well we sponsored for the little community of Yayou in the north central plateau of Haiti has surrendered the first buckets of water. I went to a beautiful ceremony there last week. It began, in a cracked-cement floor church, with prayers and ended with song and dance. Then villagers trooped down the lane to the new well -- its well house fresh-painted in blue and white -- and while a crowd waited and watched, the pump handle flew and, from deep within the rocky soil, cool and clear water gushed. It was incredibly satisfying to see those beautiful people cheering for what they have long deserved, life-sustaining clean water.
